Emily Frazier

Emily entered the Geography Department as a Ph.D. student in Fall 2016. As a population and cultural geographer, her interests broadly encompass migration and forced population movements, intersectionality, identity politics, and social integration. Her dissertation work will examine the social integration of Syrian migrants in the “post-Brexit” United Kingdom through the lens of religious practice as a way of making place and facilitating belonging.

Mimi Thomas

Mimi entered the Master’s program in Fall 2016. She is a political and cultural geographer with interests in Western Europe (specifically Germany), political regimes and their creation of place, public memory, and identity.  Her thesis examines the changing meanings of the Berlin Wall through a case study of the East End Gallery. Mimi will accompany Dr. van Riemsdijk to Oslo and London in June 2017 to assist with a study abroad course on The Age of Migration.

Ema Auernheimer

Ema is a sophomore in Geography and works as a research assistant for a project on au pairs in Norway. She transcribes sections of interviews, writes synopsis of articles on care work and au pairs, and actively participates in weekly meetings with the migration research group. Ema is very interested in the marketization of care in the Nordic welfare state. After studying in Berlin in Spring 2017, she plans to develop an independent research project on a related topic. 

Elizabeth Stanfield

Elizabeth Stanfield

Elizabeth was a research assistant for Dr. van Riemsdijk in Oslo, Norway in June 2016. She recruited participants and co-conducted interviews and participant observation for a project on au pairs in Norway. For her undergraduate honors thesis, Elizabeth studies neoliberalism in urban livability policy in Copenhagen, Denmark. The thesis examines the roles of public-private partnerships in the development of the built environment, and how attitudes toward immigration and race have shaped urban development.
